Klaus recorded a lot of music!

Can be broken down into three periods? maybe…

During his lifetime, his most popular albums were by Stillpoint and Brighter Colors by a long shot! Start there, indeed, Klaus himself started with Stillpoint, and I think it’s an amazing debut album for Klaus to record. great debut album both from Klaus and for the listener!

Really lush harmonies on Serenity.

His later years stuff is extremely unique! Developed an individualistic and somewhat unusual harmonic language. Some of it sounding “out there.” Some of WWWW.

One of my favorite parts about Klaus’s discography is that it is so sprawling and wildly different between some albums, but it always sounds so uniquely Klaus. Never for a moment could it be any other guitarist, despite such differing compositions and albums.

I’d say start with BC and SP.

If I were to rank them from most accessible to least accessible: SP, BC, serenity

Personal favorites of mine: while Driftwood is quite innovative stuff in terms of harmony, form, rhythms, textures, even tone, I think it is his most cohesive album, and the compositions are truly “art music” a magnum opus fit for the classical concert hall. Not that it makes it betteror i’d rather listen to that over some of his folkier stuff you could hear him play at the Folk Life Festival, but it’s definitely a remarkable work of art. 10 songs spanning almost exactly an hour.
